After MF Global settlement, PwC Keeps The Oscars Gig

After the MF Global trial settlement, PwC keeps the Oscar gig.

After dealing with weeks of embarrassment, brand damage, ridicule, repeated apologies, rejection and capitulation, PwC has finally caught a break.
The Hollywood Reporter reports that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has decided to retain the firm to tabulate the ballots for the Oscars despite the colossal screw-up that happened with the Best Picture envelope.  Sure, it won’t make up for the untold millions they agreed to pay to the plaintiffs in the MF Global trial, but, hey,  it’s something!

The trial between bankrupt brokerage MF Global, run by former New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine, and its former accounting firm, PwC, came to an unceremonious end on March 23rd, when both parties  reached a settlement.
Terms of the settlement were not disclosed. MF Global had been suing PwC for as much as $3 billion.
"The case was settled to the mutual satisfaction of the parties," said PwC spokesman Andrew Wilson.

Sean Stewart convicted of insider trading

UPDATE: Sean Stewart convicted on all counts.

A jury ended its first week of deliberations Friday apparently deadlocked on at least one of the counts charging a Long Island-reared investment banker with illegally passing his father insider trading tips worth $1.1 million.

Halfway into the fourth day of deliberations, the foreperson sent a note Friday to the judge saying that a unanimous verdict “may not likely happen” on each of the nine counts against Sean Stewart, 35, formerly of North Merrick.

Sean Stewart’s father, Robert Stewart, 61, of North Merrick, has admitted profiting from information about pending mergers and acquisitions about which his son knew inside information because he was an investment banker on the deals.

Sean Stewart faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
The jury’s note, sent out shortly after noon, said, “If the jury is at an impasse on a particular count, which we cannot resolve, does that mean that we have to render a not-guilty verdict, as the government has not met its burden of proof for some of the jurors? Or do we render a ‘no decision’ vote? There is no option on the verdict sheet for a ‘no decision’ option. Do we continue to deliberate until we come up with a unanimous decision, which may not likely happen?”

HONORING MEMORIAL DAY: 4 Artists' Visions

Memorial Day is so much more than the backyard barbeque. It is a day when we honor those who have served our county. Below are images from the artists in the Illustrated Courtroom book, who
over the years have drawn various MOS:  Military, FDNY, NYPD.

Howard Brodie drew countless war scenes for Yank Magazine and served in WW2.
Many of his war drawings are in the Library of Congress.
Howard was also the subject of a great documentary about war artists titled They Drew Fire.
Below is a link about Howard and the PBS film.

Aggie Kenny drew 9/11 Responders searching for victims at Ground Zero in the months after the attack on the World Trade Centers. Her artwork was shown at the New York City Police Museum, and traveled to the US Senate Russell Building in Washington DC.

APPLE eBOOK Anti-Trust Trial: Summations to Judge Cote

Today the lawyers gave their summations in the US v Apple eBook anti-trust trial.
First Orin Snyder, who is the lead attorney for Apple,  gave his summation  to Judge Cote.
At the end of his presentation, an Apple iPad animation appeared on the screen with the final words from
his summation, in the form of an eBook. The pages turned as he spoke his final words
showing off the page curl feature of the eBook. The judge took note, as did everyone else:-)

Story by Fortune reporter Philip Elmer-Dewitt

Also Publishers Weekly just published an eBook in the eBook trial and how the major publishers and Apple managed to change how eBook pricing was set for a period of time.

APPLE eBOOK Anti-Trust Trial: Eddy Cue and Judge Cote, final questions

Monday afternoon, at the US v Apple anti trust trial, the questioning of Eddy Cue was completed by Judge Cote. She was particularly curious about the 5 draft emails written by Steve Jobs, but never sent to Mr Cue.
Mr Cue did his best to answer the judges questions. Then once he was off the stand the government rested their case.

APPLE eBOOK Anti-Trust Trial Eddy Cue, continued

Today was the second and last day of Eddy Cue's testimony at the Apple trial in Manhattan federal court.
After the lawyers were done questioning Mr Cue then Judge Denise Cote got her chance. He finally finished around 4:30 pm. At that point the government rested their case. Closing statements are on Thursday.

DOJ Attorney Lawrence Buterman cross examining Mr Cue
Today at the Apple trial VP Eddy Cue( the architect of the Apple eBooks) took the stand.

Also few other interesting details emerged like

  • Apple thought that half of Amazon's E book count,( 200K books) were self published, I thought that was amazing showing the power of self publishing today.
  • A student, Sethh Humphrey emailed Apple/Steve Jobs chiding him for the increase in prices of eBooks and Jobs actually replied, another detail I thought pretty amazing.
  • Eddy Cue when asked (in a lighter moment)  if he had a picture of a board meeting, he replied "no pictures of  board meetings, just like the courtroom". The court reporter who was facing me looked up and smiled, I smiled back. Yes, there are pictures in federal court, just not photos:) yet.

WHITE BULGER TRIAL BEGINS

Whitey Bulger by Bill Robles
Bill Robles did this drawing of Whitey Bulger and his girlfriend after they were arrested  in Santa Monica Ca.
James "Whitey" Bulger, the alleged mob boss and Top Ten Fugitive who had been on the run since the mid-'90s, was arrested almost 2 years ago June 2011, at the Princess Eugenia apartment complex in Santa Monica. His longtime companion, Catherine Greig, was also arrested.

Yesterday the trial began in Boston, with his brother, William former president of the Mass State Senate attending the trial. The trial is expected to last 3 months.
Here is an expert from the Washington post story by Michael Rosenwald,

BOSTON — James “Whitey” Bulger is an old man now. He is 83.
He wears reading glasses. His hair is pure white, but not much remains. And when he stood up in a federal courtroom Wednesday morning to finally face the music, to stand trial for a lifetime of gangster crimes, he rose slowly, no longer the menacing Irish mob boss who allegedly scratched out 19 lives while the FBI looked the other way.

Richard Ramirez, known as 'Night Stalker' California serial killer, dies

Bill Robles covered the Night Stalker case which terrified Los Angeles residents for several years and was one of the most grisly, horrifying cases in LA history.
This drawing was always one of Bill's favorites, which shows that no matter the subject, producing a good drawing is key.

PBS Memorial Day Interview w Howard Brodie May 1996

13 years ago on Memorial Day Howard Brodie was interviewed  on the PBS News Hour by Betty Ann Bowser. Howard Brodie was the dean of courtroom art, beginning his career as a court artist for CBS covering the Jack Ruby Trial              ( which will be included in the Illustrated Courtroom: 50 Years of Court Art).   He was also a revered combat artist and drew on the front lines in many battles and speaks about those experiences in the interview.
Howard was a remarkable artist and person. We are honored that he agreed to be part of the upcoming book.
Below is the transcript of the interview from 1996

Capture the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Moments As a Courtroom Sketch Artist

Capture the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Moments As a Courtroom Sketch Artist

This is an  article about courtroom artists, link above^.
A fact about court artists I did not know, that court artists covered the Salem Witch trials.
A painting from the trials below is in the collection of the  Smithsonian.
.
But a lot of stuff is just not true,  the fact that we arrive several minutes before a proceeding
more like several hours before, why cameras are barred and we are used, how we are paid, etc.
The upcoming court art book, www.illustratedcourtroom.com
should clear up some of this mis-information.

James Holmes entering the courtroom, May 13, 2013 by Bill Robles

I am in the courtroom, standing by my front row aisle seat as the court slowly fills with grief stricken families on one side, and media people on my side.  There are 7 or 8, crew cut, tough looking sheriffs all over the courtroom.

As the starting time approaches, we wait for Holmes to enter the courtroom, and then silence as the door opens and he is escorted in, handcuffed, and appearing to be in another world.

With everyone in place, the judge enters
